The German Biotechnology Sector 2010

Die deutsche Biotechnologie-Branche 2010 <ic:message key='Bild vergrößern' />

Unlike the majority of other industries, German biotechnology has actually grown during the crisis. In 2009, the number of employees exceeded the 30,000 mark for the first time. These are the central results of the company survey carried out at the beginning of 2010 by the information platform biotechnologie.de on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The German Biotechnology Sector

Unlike the majority of other industries, German biotechnology has actually grown during the crisis. In 2009, the number of employees exceeded the 30,000 mark for the first time. In terms of turnover, biotech companies managed to maintain their course, even at the height of the crisis. As with the previous year, this figure stood at two billion euros. Moreover, investments in the future have not been scaled back. At one billion euros, research spending remained at the same level as the previous year. The effect of this was that the drug candidate pipeline continued to grow in 2009. Nevertheless, concerns remain about the difficult financial environment. These are the central results of the company survey carried out at the beginning of 2010 by the information platform biotechnologie.de on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The data are in compliance with the guidelines laid out by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD; see pages 27 ff for methodology). According to the survey, at 531, the number of companies occupied primarily with biotechnology in 2009 is higher than the 2008 figure (501). Accompanying this, the number of employees also increased to 14,950 (2008: 14,450). The significance of biotechnology in companies where it represents only one aspect of business activities rose even more strongly. The number of employees in this biotech sector rose by more than 1,000 to 16,650 (2008: 15,520).

Context

The biotechnology company survey has been conducted by biotechnologie.de for the forth time now. The time period over which the assessment has been carried out was January to April, 2010.  Out of the total 689 contacted firms,  572 participated in the survey – which is a response rate of 83%. The cutoff date for the information included in the survey was 31.12.2009.

In a separate appraisal, the biotechnology-related activities of German research facilities have been thoroughly mapped out for the first time. The deadline for related information was 31 December 2008, and the survey itself took place between September and November 2009. A total of 712 institutes across 202 research facilities were contacted, and the overall return rate was 32%.

Companies with their main focus predominantly or exclusively on biotechnology are classified as biotechnology companies. In this report they are referred to as dedicated biotech companies. Firms that are a majority-owned subsidiary of a non-German parent company but have a business address in Germany and perform R&D were also included.

This approach is orientated along the statistical guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2004.
