Antibiotics (visible here as a halo around the white pads) are the most important weapons in the fight against pathogens (white stripes). A decreasing number of such agents are effective against multi-resistant bacteria. 21.02.2013

The antibiotic offensive

Ever more bacteria are developing resistance to antibiotics, and the supply of new drugs against dangerous microbes is failing to keep pace. A new EU research consortium is hoping to change this state of affairs.

At the new CBP biorefinery research centre processes are being developed to extract chemicals from biomass raw materials for use in industry. German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel was present for the inauguration of the facility. She was joined by the prime minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff and Fraunhofer Association president Reimund Neugebauer (first on right). 04.10.2012

Chancellor inaugurates Leuna biorefinery centre

The new Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes is now in operation in Leuna. Chancellor Angela Merkel was there for the inauguration of the €53 million flagship project.

The European Research Council uses the ‘ERC Starting Grants’ to support European young researchers with an average of €1.5 million each. 18.09.2012

ERC: Million-strong funding for 31 German life science researchers

The ERC is granting funding of €800 million to projects by young researchers. Among others, numerous German research institutions -home to 30 projects from the life sciences -can look forward to generous support.

The Biopharma competition is heading into the second round. Among others, the Neu2 consortium in northern Germany is celebrating a further 20 million euros in funding. 07.08.2012

BioPharma competition: €20 million for the Neu2 consortium

The next stage of the BMBF's BioPharma competition has kicked off: The North German consortium Neu2 can celebrate a further €20 million in funding for the development of drugs against multiple sclerosis.

Around 200 representatives from science, academia, business and politics came together in Berlin to discuss possible future developments in biotechnology. 29.06.2012

Towards the next generation of biotechnology

In the BMBF’s Biotechnology 2020+ strategy process, bioscientists and engineers are putting their heads together to develop the next generation of biotechnological processes. A stocktaking of the process recently took place at the 3rd annual congress in Berlin.

The strategic alliance FuPol will be shaping the future of industrial biotechnology: Christian Leggewie from Düsseldorf-based enzyme specialists evocatal (far left) and Ulrich Schwaneberg (RWTH Aachen, centre). BMBF State Secretary Georg Schütte presented the sponsoring certificate at the ACHEMA event in Frankfurt. 19.06.2012

Unusual alliances for the biobased industry

At the ACHEMA in Frankfurt, there was a clear trend towards bio-based industry, with a focus in particular on biorefineries. Three strategic alliances for industrial biotechnology can now look forward to multi-million-euro support.

On the path to the bioeconomy: the federal government is providing support for growing numbers of research projects in industrial biotechnology. Pictured here, a 5000-litre fermenter at BASF. 28.03.2012

Federal government: Increasingly important role for white biotechnology

With the assistance of federal government support strategies, industrial biotechnology is taking on an increasingly important role. This is underlined by the response to a brief parliamentary enquiry from the SPD fraction in the Bundestag.

Science Council: 462 million euros for new research buildings

Every year, the Science Council appraises research buildings planned for construction at universities in Germany. Biotechnology is particularly well represented this year, making up seven of the 16 projects put forward for funding.

What biotechnological innovations will be required in the future? And where is there a pressing need for research? Questions such as these were at the foreground of the annual congress for the strategic process ‘Next Generation of Biotechnological Processes’. 15.07.2011

The biotechnology of tomorrow: The next stage in the strategic process

What will the biotechnology of the future look like? What steps in research and development will be required before this can be achieved? These are the kinds of questions being posed by the strategic process Biotechnology 2020+, which was launched by the Federal Ministry of Research in 2010. The recent second Annual Congress took a first stock of the process.
