The modern human genome research has changed our understanding of the causes of human diseases and findings have become increasingly significant for medical practice. If diseases of the nervous systems, the cardiovascular system or infections - many of them are influenced by genes. In 2001 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has initiated the National Genome Research Network (NGFN) to bundle the scientific forces in Germany under one roof. The brochure gives easy to understand information about human genome research in general, but also about selected projects within the NGFN.
