Aims
The objective of the "Biopolymers / Biomaterials" cluster is an improved networking of the biotechnology sector, the chemical industry and plastic production, with the ultimate aim of driving forward the development of biological materials in the areas of automotive manufacturing, packaging and construction industries. The 54 companies, alongside more than twenty research institutions from a broad variety of disciplines, hope to find new ways of realising a move away from fossil fuels in industrial production. The subject areas in the first 21 projects cover a wide spectrum: On the one hand, new approaches in the development of bio-based basic chemicals such as polymers, as well as new properties in other materials, will be sought. On the other hand, also important will be overcoming specific technological bottlenecks in industrial production with the help of biotechnological processes. In their research activities, the partners in the network are concentrating on the area of "molecular bionics", which combines the knowledge gained from the biotechnological determination of structures with the chemistry of modern polymers and plastics. At the same time, high-throughput technologies, long established in biotechnological and pharmaceutical research, will be used in the testing and structural determination of various materials.
